Avoiding Toxic New Year Resolutions Post-Breakup

Avoiding Toxic New Year Resolutions Post-Breakup

The new year is such a great time for goal setting. After I divorced, more of my new year resolutions came true when they didn’t force me to be “positive or happy” all the time. I chose goals that focused more on my intentions verses my expectations.

Here’s examples of how I did it:

Instead of: “I’ll be over him/her by New Year’s.” I used: “I will practice self-care daily, and seek support from loved ones.”

Instead of: “I’m going to find my soulmate by the end of the year.” I used: “I will focus on building strong friendships and nurturing my own happiness.”

Instead of: “I’ll never feel this pain again.” I used: “I will allow myself to feel my emotions, and trust that healing takes time.”

Most importantly be kind to ourselves. Goals are meant to be achievable. And being truthful to ourselves is the BEST place to start!

If this is a struggle or you need more guidance, please seek the help of a licensed professional.

Wishing you lots of love and light this new year!
